TWO IN ONE

24 April 2022

In Double Vision, I said that I'd get to the new two modes of play, but Set Dressin' got in the way. Onto that now.

One neat new feature of Recut in the works is two modes of play - Freedom Mode and Commander Mode (the latter's name ain't final). You'll get a similar core gameplay experience with both of 'em, but there's a modus operandi to that latter mode.

The goal of Commander Mode? To be the strongest, of course.

Now, some of the planned core gameplay features include questing, adventures, and battling. Basically, stuff that was supposed to be in the original Riftcast, including a player character who handles their party.

Freedom Mode mainly consists of you and your party doing whatever, really. Tourneys, arenas, villages, it's all accessible from the get-go. You get to choose from 10 starting villages and wide choice of starters, some of which are already fully evolved and ready for action. Version differences don't matter all too much here, but you're still a little less likely to encounter species of the version you didn't go for.

In Commander Mode, you're assigned two fully evolved Reverians to train for missions/quests and turf wars. Battling and training are the main focus here, and your player character has a much lower presence here than in Freedom Mode. Here, version differences are much more noticeable, starting with the two opposing factions - the Lumina Company and Umbra Corps, exclusive to Red and Blue versions respectively. Locations, species and even the kind of missions/quests that you're more likely to get are dependent on version/faction.

In another article I'll go over quest types, some of which varying depending on what side you're on.

This was one of the last major features settled on before Revision 2, if only to force in that operative number again.
